September is a day or two away as I put this newsletter together.  School starts in a few short days and my family, like so many others, will get into another new daily routine.  I LOVE having a routine, helps keep me focused and I feel like I have accomplished something everyday.  One of my routines that I will be starting again is to sew every day!  I haven't been as diligent about this goal since May. However, it's time to get it started again.  My husband and boys will attest that I am a happier camper when I get to use my sewing machine on a regular basis.

Saturday, September 16th is National Sew a Jelly Roll Day.  We have a special sewing event planned, if you would like to join us, look below for some additional details.  If you don't have time to sew with us that day, no worries.  You can still celebrate with us...all 2.5" strip sets will be 15% off (Saturday only).  We have a great assortment to choose from!

Cost: $10.00 per month, plus supplies

If you've already taken a beginner quilt class and are ready for the next step in learning how to quilt, look no further!  This class is designed for the beginner quilter who would like to build their knowledge base.  You'll learn the next steps in piecing various blocks and make a sampler quilt at the same time.   Class meets once a month and each month you will be working on a different quilt block.  Examples include the Bear Paw, the Snail's Trail, and Cottage Garden.  At the end of 12 months, you'll have 12 blocks ready to assemble in a layout of your choice.  Come join Jen as she shares her love of quilting with you.

This class will repeat, so you can join us anytime!

Embroidery and color tinting have been around for many years and is a treasured skill that you will love learning.  This is a class that anyone at any skill level will enjoy!  On the day of the class, Leslie Peterson will teach you at least 12 stitches, bead attachment and needle uses and thread types.  You will have your choice of 7 or more possible patterns, where you will learn the art of color tinting in 4 ways, all of which are permanent and beginner friendly.  All you need to bring is a small pair of thread scissors and a needle threader (if you need one). The kit will have everything needed to complete a wall hanging sized project (except for backing, batting and special attachments that are shown as suggestions on class samples).

Upcoming Fabric Collections Arriving at Compass Star Quilt Shop

If you're like me, I follow social media frequently and I enjoy seeing new fabrics being unveiled, even though they may be more than 6 months out from actually being available.  I am a planner and I love to plan my time and my projects, and so knowing when a certain fabric group is coming, I can be on the lookout for a special pattern to use with that group.  Then I can pencil it into my calendar, knowing that I want to sew with that new fabric as soon as possible.  Here is a partial list of what's coming to the shop!

This recipe is fast and fun and so delicous! A simple dessert that transports great for lunches and potlucks.

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup softened butter
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 8oz chocolate chips

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. Mix together brown sugar and butter.  Add egg and mix together.
  3. Add flour, salt and vanilla and mix together well.
  4. Spread dough onto a cookie sheet to a thickness of 1/4" to 1/2" inch.
  5. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until slightly brown.  At this point, pull out of the oven and sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over the top. Return to oven for 1 minute. Remove and spread melted chips over the top. Cut into squares.  I like to add additional toppings like mini m and m's as soon as it comes out of the oven.
